Pilates comparison

Mat Pilates or reformer Pilates: where should you start?

Mat and reformer Pilates teach the same foundations: breathing, control, alignment and deliberate movement. The difference is how resistance and support are provided.

Guide

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates uses body weight and gravity. It builds awareness without relying on a machine and is easy to continue at home. Foundation classes are often the simplest starting point for someone who wants to learn the basic positions and language of Pilates.

Guide

Reformer Pilates

The reformer uses springs, a carriage, straps and a footbar. Springs can add resistance, but they can also support a movement. This makes the reformer useful for both challenging strong students and helping beginners learn with assistance.

How to choose

Choose mat if you prefer a simple setup, want a lower entry price or want exercises you can practise without equipment. Choose reformer if you enjoy guided machine work, want adjustable resistance or prefer a smaller group around dedicated equipment.

There is no requirement to master one before trying the other. Many students use both.

Questions

Before you book

Is reformer Pilates harder than mat Pilates?

Not automatically. Spring settings and movement range change the difficulty. Either format can be gentle or challenging.

Can beginners join both?

Yes. Tell the instructor you are new so the class can begin with the appropriate setup and pace.

Which costs less?

Mat classes generally have a lower drop-in price. Current Hae Studio prices are published on the packages page.
